To celebrate 150 years of legal education we’ve reached out to our students, past and present, and asked them to share their stories and memories from their time with us.
Eddie Lawson studied with us in the early nineties and, alongside perfecting his legal expertise, he also found love on campus. Read on to hear more about Eddie’s time with us, how his career has changed and what advice he’d give to those just starting out on their legal journey.

When and where did you study with us?
I studied at Сֲ in 1990–1991, although it was known as the College of Law at the time. I was studying for the Law Society’s Final Examination (LSF).
How did you and your wife meet?
Daniella and I both studied the LSF, but we were in different classes and one of my friends from school was in her class. Over the Christmas holiday I got very sick and had to have my appendix removed. I was too sick to attend college or go out, but I didn’t want to miss out on social life, so when a mutual friend was having a party, I invited a bunch of people over for Chinese takeaway before the party. My friend from school asked if he could bring a classmate and brought Danny along. We chatted all evening, until they had to leave to go to the party.
One day, during a break between classes, Danny and I were sitting having a coffee when a pigeon pooped on us both. My mother and Danny’s father were both very superstitious and thought this was a good omen.
How did you support one another during challenging times at university?
It was very challenging. The course required us to learn a huge amount of content, so we spent some time testing each other on various aspects covered by the course.
What are your best memories of your time at Сֲ?
Apart from meeting Danny, the real outcome from the course was lasting friendships. The course was a means to an end, it was a requirement at the time to getting a training contract with a law firm, but I think the intensity of the course meant that the friendships were more substantial.
What do you and Danny do now?
I’m a Portfolio General Counsel and have a number of clients, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). I provide advice and support to SMEs on legal, compliance and strategic matters and minimise their legal exposure, working with them from formation to exit.
Danny is a charity trustee and sits on the board of several charities. She practised as a lawyer for a while and was Chair of governors of a Multi Academy Trust for some years too.
How have your career and life goals changed and evolved since your time at university?
At law school I wanted to work in a law firm. However, I studied for an MBA after qualifying and decided business was more interesting. I now sit at the border between law and business. For many years my work, at the expense of almost everything else, was my main focus. However, I’ve come to realise you need balance.
What advice would you give to students starting out on their career journey?
Don’t think of anything you do as being for life and be prepared to learn and take lessons from whatever you do. I know many lawyers who now do other things. Legal education and practice give you many valuable transferable skills.
